Since our inception in 2010, we have grown into a fully-fledged ME&L services firm that specializes in advancing innovative methodologies and changing the way donors find solutions to social problems.

Activity background: USAID / Kenya East Africa seeks to advance what self-reliance means for Kenya and the broader region. To support USAID/KEA to align programming toward promoting self-reliance outcomes, SoCha LLC has recently been awarded and will implement a two-year (optional three-year) mission support program to enable USAID to pivot into this journey to self-reliance (J2SR). To support this journey, the J2SR program will support USAID/KEA to understand context, align programs, collect data, understand complexity, and apply learning to program adaptation.

Thus, the Journey to Self-Reliance program aims to:

  1. Strengthen monitoring, verification, and reporting systems;
  2. Improve the utilization of evaluations, assessments, and analyses to fulfill learning objectives and inform decisions;
  3. Improve internal and external coordination, collaboration, and learning;
  4. Enhance practices of learning and adapting; and
  5. Support strategy development and process management.

J2SR is both a support contract and a core learning mechanism for the USAID/KEA mission. J2SR will support USAID/Kenya and East Africa across all technical areas, operating in Nairobi, Kenya with travel in both Kenya and the East Africa region.

J2SR will partner with local organizations and local firms and will work to build local capacity to drive ambitious development agenda throughout Kenya and East Africa.

Position background: The J2SR program, implemented by SoCha LLC, seeks a highly motivated Communications Specialist to support and provide communications guidance for a variety of learning products and services.

The Communications Specialist will work on the Strategy and Programs team, primarily assigned to support USAID Kenya/East Africa in their development and communication of strategy, policy, and programs information.

The Communications Specialist will also support other J2SR staff and teams to ensure high quality communications for all J2SR products and services. The Communications Specialist will be expected to support both strategy-related trainings, workshops, and events, and other such events for USAID/KEA and J2SR.

Responsibilities:

  • Support J2SR colleagues to ensure high quality external communication standards for external (and client-facing) documents, reports, presentations, evaluations, assessments, analyses, and learning and communication products
    1. Guide J2SR colleagues to produce products and services which communicate effectively and advance J2SR objectives
    2. Adhere to and propagate USAID branding and marketing standards
    3. Adhere to and propagate high quality writing, editing, formatting, and visual presentation standards
  • Support the USAID Kenya/East Africa strategy development process
    1. Compose and edit presentations, create and incorporate graphics, develop and maintain high quality visual production standards
    2. Document internal and external consultations
    3. Develop internal and external communications products to advance the strategy development process
    4. Provide broad support to organize and execute internal and external learning and collaboration events with USAID personnel, implementing partners, and other stakeholders
  • Support USAID/KEA Strategic Planning and Analysis (SPA) office to develop templates, tools, knowledge management, and communications systems
  • Support other USAID implementing partners and communicate USAID/KEA strategies, policies, procedures, support the design, organization, and execution of trainings on USAID policy
  • Support the design, organization, and execution of various events, trainings, and workshops
  • Identify and engage local experts to supplement J2SR program: videographers, graphic designers, etc.
  • Provide internal writing and editorial support, document review, error checking for various monitoring, evaluation, and learning products
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a similar field
  • Experience in print or digital communications, publications, marketing, journalism, and/or events management
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills
  • Excellent oral presentation skills in English
  • Working knowledge of common graphic and document design software, such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or alternatives
  • A proactive self-starter able to work both independently and collaboratively, creative and resourceful
  • Knowledge and experience adhering to visual and written production standards, understanding of and ability to apply and communicate standards
  • Experience working with USAID preferred
  • Kenyan Nationals preferred

Place of performance: Nairobi, Kenya with occasional travel within Kenya or East Africa region

Period of performance: Through the life of the activity, October 15, 2021, unless extended by a modification to the employment agreement, or terminated in accordance with SoCha LLC policy and Kenya law

Reporting: The Communications Specialist reports to the Strategy and Program Advisor.
