The Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) wishes to fill a key vacant position at its secretariat in Nairobi, Kenya. The position, as highlighted below, is to be filled on full-time basis. NASAC is a consortium of 29 science academies in Africa and has a two-fold mandate: (i) To make the voice of science heard by policy and decision-makers in Africa and worldwide, so as to become the regional science advisor; and (ii) To strengthen and increase its academy-membership in Africa, and thereby becoming a formidable network for the enhancement of science, technology and innovation.

Project Officer 

Responsibilities
The Project Officer will support the Project Director to develop and enhance coordination, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms of the project titled: Decarbonization of Transport in Africa: A Transport Planning Perspective. Within delegated authority, s/he will be responsible for the following main duties:

• Conduct background research and data synthesis to support the project.
• Develop written and graphic material, edit reports and coordinate publication of materials as provided by working group members.
• Assist in outreach, fundraising and communications tasks for the project
• Liaise and manage communication with working group members, collaborating organizations and funders of the project.
• Manage reporting to donors by providing requisite information based on project agreement.
• Assist with other programmatic, administrative and financial tasks within the programmes department.
• Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams, together with NASAC colleagues on special assignments that serve to enhance and fulfil the scope of the project within the mandate of NASAC.

Key Competencies
Professionalism and integrity, good communication (written and oral) skills, teamwork, planning and organizing, as well as a commitment to continual learning and improvement are critical skills. Knowledge of French as a second foreign language will be an added advantage.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in any related field of policy, International development or science. Master’s degree is an added advantage.
• At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a donor funded project in the context of Africa, with a good track record in project management and coordination (International Project Management experience preferred)
• Knowledge and interest on how ground-transport in Africa is contributing to climate change.
• Familiarity with the funding stipulations from major donors and foreign funding agencies.
• Capacity to start and interlink new initiatives, activities and programmes as well as ability to translate global concepts into local contexts.
